war with North Korea at all cost he said
00:00:17
dialogue is possible of Pyongyang to halt
its nuclear and missile testing concern
00:00:22
over the world threat of progress in
developing a nuclear tipped intercut
00:00:26
a ballistic missile has
heightened global tensions in
00:00:29
a tweet Wednesday President Donald Trump
said North Korean leader Kim Jong had made
00:00:32
a wise decision to postpone a plan
to launch missiles toward the U.S.
00:00:36
Pacific island territory of Guam vice
president Mike Pence visiting Chile was asked
00:00:42
about that we welcome the statements of
the camera Sheen this week with regard to
00:00:46
Guam but our objective is clear it is
00:00:49
a nuclear free Korean peninsula and we want
the regime in Pyongyang to permanently
00:00:54
abandon its nuclear and ballistic missile
programs and ambitions and will continue
00:01:00
to bring pressure to bear to
reach that goal Meanwhile U.S.
00:01:04
Spokesperson Heather now or called again
on the north to hold its destabilizing
00:01:08
activities a good point would
be a good show. Of Faith
00:01:13
a good show of goodwill would be to
stop nuclear nuclear testing to stop
00:01:18
a list of missile testing to stop the state
to stop destabilizing activities and
00:01:22
the region that would be a
good starting point U.N.

who died in massive mudslides this week
00:02:03
the grim task of burying the dead began in
one of Africa's worst flood disasters to
00:02:07
forestall the threat or the threat of
disease burials of hundreds of bodies began
00:02:12
in and around the capital Freetown. Mahdi's
family was tragically impacted I have
00:02:18
really steamed space and I don't let
the staff with that sixty day of
00:02:22
a husband or died I've never seen sorting
through metal life before the country of
00:02:27
six million I just emerged
from the effects of the
00:02:29
a bold outbreak president orders by Koroma
went on national television to express
00:02:34
his condolences to the families of the
victims I am very distraught but this is not
00:02:39
you know tragedy I would not have you
have let me extend the group. To the
00:02:45
families hundreds are still missing and
feared dead thousands have been made
00:02:49
homeless in Venezuela nearly forty
armed inmates were killed during
00:02:53
a raid by security forces to regain
control of the Southern prison reports
00:02:58
indicated that many prisoners believed to
have been in control of the jail resisted
00:03:02
government efforts meanwhile UN secretary
general and Tony good terrorist Wednesday
00:03:07
called on the government in opposition to
restart negotiations to end that South
00:03:11
American countries long political social
and economic crisis because I believe that
00:03:16
only solution is
00:03:17
a political solution based on those
negotiations than his will and authorities on
00:03:22
Wednesday announced they are seeking
to arrest the husband of ousted chief
00:03:26
prosecutor Luis Ortega on
allegations of running
00:03:29

00:03:36
Today poll over the policies that it's
pursuing in Chile Wednesday Vice President
00:03:42
Mike Pence spoke of the tragedy of tyranny
in his words unfolding in Venezuela the
00:03:46

forced to endure that fade by the brutality
00:03:51
of the middle row regime Venezuela's
sliding into dictatorship and as President
00:03:56
Trump has said the United States will
not stand by as Venezuela crumbles and
00:04:01
supported Chile signing along with eleven
other countries of the Lima declaration
00:04:05
standing with the Venezuelan people and
standing up to what he called their
00:04:09
oppressors Iraq's foreign

For international help in gathering
evidence against Islamic state for possible

said it will welcome Qatari pilgrims to
00:04:26
perform the hodge despite ongoing diplomatic
dispute with got her over its alleged
00:04:31
support of terrorism the Sabah border
crossing has been reopened U.S.
00:04:35
Central bank policy makers appear hesitant
to further increase the key interest
00:04:39
rate amid signs we can place in minutes
from the last month's Federal Reserve
00:04:43
meeting indicate they're also going to cut
the bank's Mazza portfolio of Treasury
00:04:47
bonds I'm Victor beat and that's
the latest world news from oh hey.
00:05:04
Good morning everyone welcome to DAYBREAK
Africa from the Voice of America I'm
00:05:07
James but in Washington today is Thursday
August seventeenth and here are some of
00:05:12
this the reason we're covering. Mass
funerals today for some of the victims of
00:05:16
Monday's must. Continues for the missing.
00:05:24
Morning that we have drawn them in.
00:05:31
One on forty. From the wreckage of. A
00:05:38
spokesman for President Ernest Bai Koroma
Nigeria's demand their president return
00:05:43
home to resume work all resigned the
number of candidates in today's Liberia
00:05:48
presidential election debate is less two
and Zambia's me opposition party there was
00:05:54
no quid pro quo yesterday released
from prison of his leader.
00:06:01
But.
00:06:15
Spokesman for Zambians me opposition
party and some newly arriving African
00:06:20
immigrants in Italy get training
at beekeepers those there was also
00:06:24
a listen of the day are
coming up on DAYBREAK Africa.
00:06:34
The government will today Thursday carry
out mass burials full of some of the
00:06:39
victims of Monday's must lie as the search
continues for the estimated six hundred
00:06:43
more still believed to be missing there
it is spokesman for President Ernest Bai
00:06:49
Koroma says over three hundred bodies have
been recovered so far he says President
00:06:55
will attend. Paris which will take place
near the city of Waterloo about twenty
00:07:00
miles east of the capital Freetown seen
yesterday morning we have been receiving
00:07:07
families that the men cannot speak
of much worry after we put out
00:07:11
a statement that we wanted them to identify
their loved one so that if they wanted
00:07:17
bodies. On the our own we can give
them that opportunity apparently
00:07:24
some came to identify their loved
ones they prayed with them gave them
00:07:29
a last respect and eventually the and they
drove across the game to the government
00:07:35
that this was the government that they
took him to be around that was going to
00:07:39
happen later today so as I'm speaking to
you now although mortalities are being put
00:07:46
in place will be taken this cop safe.
Told this morning the latest to go we
00:07:52
have from the man cannot speak to ace three
hundred and thirty one bodies that we
00:07:59
have recovered from wreckage of
the disaster and events talented
00:08:04
a president of cause it will be in water
which is about twenty miles away from
00:08:09
three thousand and bosses have also been
provided for debris families and all that
00:08:14
when we should particularly
when we have also instituted
00:08:18
a seven days national mourning so
00:08:20
a lot of people are going to sympathize
with what is generally believed to be
00:08:25
a national tragedy Mr Barrett in
the wake of today's mass barrier.
00:08:33
An indication mount that the search and
rescue is over because one account I'm
00:08:39
reading is that as many as maybe six
hundred to nine hundred people might be
00:08:45
accounted for well it is for the very reason
that you rightly said that we are not
00:08:52
acquainted or can. Catch them
arrest. So this morning as we are
00:08:58
preparing for the barrier we can still see
Ambulante toward the mortuary green to
00:09:05
mean party so this is where we have to
continue in the rescue operation and we have
00:09:11
a very optimistic that down the road we
might be able to look at life because the
00:09:17
good news stories of the so five hours
we have in our videos hospitals that are
00:09:23
very indications that. Via
valleys ninety percent how close
00:09:29
is your government about
the possibility of
00:09:34
a disease outbreak because this is minute
season we have very much concern we have
00:09:40
activated a level three
security apparatus which is
00:09:44
a military aid to the whole community we
have also walked in with many soft health
00:09:50
and sanitation I mean one of the
people as well as published as part of
00:09:54
a quality need to respond we have to water
had and sanitation and hygiene people
00:10:00
which is very key and as I'm speaking
to you now we have gone to the affected
00:10:05
communities just to make sure that preventive
measures are being put in place. At
00:10:11
the liabilities
00:10:12
a spokesman for civil and President Ernest
Bai Koroma speaking with me from the
00:10:17
capital Freetown Nigerian president Mohammad
duble Hariri has be in London since
00:10:22
May this year seeking treatment full and
on specified ailment last week you know
00:10:28
that he is ready to return home but
Nigerians are growing impatient an online
00:10:34
campaign resume all resign is gaining
traction across the country CICA old well
00:10:40
reports of us from. This
year President Mohamed
00:10:44
a Bihari has spent more time outside of
Nigeria than in the country who are you
00:10:50
return from London in March after being
away for nearly two months treating an
00:10:55
undisclosed illness he left again on May
seventh during both of his absences Bihari
00:11:01
has followed the Constitution temporarily
passing executive power to his vice
00:11:07
president citizen say it is time
for the Nigerian president to make
00:11:11
a decision either get back to work or
step down the president. Was right it
00:11:18
was up this street rally on Tuesday is one
of several that have been conducted in
00:11:25
the capital of Abuja over the past week
participants carried banners with bold
00:11:30
words printed resume or resign the slogan
stems from the hash tag campaign that
00:11:36
started online earlier this month and
quickly spread in Lagos and there have also
00:11:42
been street demonstrations on Tuesday in
the resume resigned activists entered an
00:11:48
open market and came face to face with
the market traders many of whom are avid
00:11:54
supporters of President Bihari was
00:11:57
the sable Hari Sable Hari the pro-ball
00:12:04
Hari supporters began chanting it
means only Bihari in the local house
00:12:10
a language. Each VO way so pro Biharis
supporters began beating the resume or
00:12:15
resigned activist local newspaper reporter
diary Richards said he had to seek
00:12:21
medical treatment after the
Tuesday rally. Nigerians are
00:12:28
divided over the issue but the calls for
resignation are getting louder Hillary
00:12:33
many and as a president is just
00:12:35
a virus to the country as well because he
is someone sick for the first time on his
00:12:40
P.C.
00:12:41
He should be allowed to call then come back
on can see new being praised things and
00:12:46
we love him. It is only in this country
it bridges that and would like to rule on
00:12:53
it are welcome to like this from another
country I mean it is but we have minimal
00:12:59
what is going on without for him to resign
and faces heads as round of our power to
00:13:04
his vice. Devise with the baton V.P.
00:13:08
Yemi ocean by Joe has been an active acting
president he has carried out the daily
00:13:13
duties of state and he has been pushing
an economic agenda to attract foreign
00:13:18
investors in hopes of lifting Africa's
most populous nation out of its recession
00:13:24
last week Bihari announced that he is ready
to return from London and is waiting
00:13:29
for his doctor's approval though the
Nigerian people remain in the dark about the
00:13:34
president's exact state of health his
advisers and the first lady say he is
00:13:39
recovering and doing fine but there is
much doubt Nigeria's Constitution requires
00:13:46
a two thirds vote of the president's
cabinet as well as confirmation by medical
00:13:50
panel that the president is quote incapable
of discharging the functions of his
00:13:56
office end quote before he could
be removed what do we want. They
00:14:03
say they'll continue protesting in the
streets until the president returns to
00:14:07
Nigeria Chico dua for V.O.A.
00:14:10
News. Here listening to daybreak Africa
and the Voice of America and James but in
00:14:15
Washington today is Thursday August seventeenth
DAYBREAK Africa time forty minutes
00:14:20
past the hour organizers of today's six
candidates debate in Liberia's October
00:14:26
tenth presidential election said the number
of participants has been reduced by two
00:14:31
the debate is expected to focus on six
issues of concern to the Liberian people
00:14:36
including the economy security and
rule of law peace and reconciliation
00:14:41
anti-corruption policy agriculture and you
for empowerment the public is to make
00:14:47
the kind of does this cause issues rather
than personalities let me go oh is
00:14:52
a member of the deepening democracy coalition
the group that is organizing today's
00:14:57
presidential debate he says the two
candidates who will not be participating in
00:15:02
today's debate Senator George Weah of the
Coalition for Democratic Change and from
00:15:07
a national bank governor Jay Mills who
is the presidential candidate of the
00:15:12
movement for economic
empowerment party. Yesterday.
00:15:19
Disability Mr Joyce we are anticipating.
That he will not be patented by The
00:15:26
Who can participate in.
This misuses all. Contact.
00:15:33
In
00:15:33
a little part of the country and. What is
the reason for Senator we are not wanting
00:15:39
to participate or
00:15:40
a condo while he is campaigning. To
leave us with the letter and we send
00:15:47
our invitation to. People of his
area yesterday that we would
00:15:54
have never seen him. Here are you planning
on having another presidential debate
00:16:01
well or will an election will
be only. For this one and
00:16:08
only. Generally. In these wars.
00:16:16
You said that the vice president Mr Black-Eyed
and the rest of the other people are
00:16:21
going to participate that. He will. Be
00:16:27
a politician. Or to be I would not likely
is this is first time that such a D.
00:16:33
Bit
00:16:34
a presidential candidate is going to be taken
place for this election I still. Believe
00:16:41
. In what I mean historically Army has
there be any presidential debate our
00:16:47
historic presidential. Father will be
able to get in this debate as he has his
00:16:54
history will. Have Been
will be. Very interesting.
00:17:02
Mr Taylor will eventually want participate
in or. Participate in the way
00:17:09
the major wars. The. Kinship
of evaluation particularly
00:17:16
these along. Let me go as
00:17:20
a member of the deepening democracy coalition
the group that is organizing first
00:17:24
this presidential debate in Liberia
speaking with me from the capital Monrovia
00:17:29
Zambia's main opposition party the united
party for national development you P.N.D.
00:17:35
Says there was no quid pro quo yesterday's
release from prison of this leader haka
00:17:40
in the his dilemma he had been charged
with treason for failing to make way for
00:17:44
president. Motorcade there were rumors that
the government was planted to drop the
00:17:50
charges if Mr Hayes dillema would recognize
President as their legitimate president
00:17:55
but on Wednesday the Director of Public
Prosecutions dropped the charges without
00:18:00
giving a reason. Spokesman for
the opposition you P.N.D.
00:18:04
Party says Mr He told him I will hold
00:18:06
a news conference in the
next few days to address
00:18:09
a number of issues in. Today whether to
recognize dilute the government on and were
00:18:14
happy large a particular event
have been relieved and today was
00:18:18
a great day for our party people have
been celebrating dancing and some of them
00:18:25
crying to joy and so on from the high
caught up to the prison facility
00:18:32
what has
00:18:33
a name to the president's
house. So I ask you the other
00:18:40
day yesterday or so why was
he released was there and
00:18:44
a deal made for him to be released was
very unsettled prevented him called to
00:18:49
a director probably
perfect solutions cited
00:18:52
a provision in the question that. She had
00:18:59
power to be in
00:19:01
a case giving rebels no reasons and some
of the nation was under that. Citing that
00:19:08
she could be. An absolute zero
power or indeed due to Maui
00:19:15
administration of public interest
and those of any other. State
00:19:21
ever the three Mr had to limit this speak
to his supporters and I understand that
00:19:28
he thinks that now is the time than be to
move forward what does that mean can he
00:19:33
be interpreted to me that tell he's
willing to work with the government well
00:19:39
everybody was following them and positive
Can you see that what I reckon today is
00:19:44
just one step towards the breeding
of democracy in the kind of lives
00:19:51
that was mostly only important event in
the. Politics what is needed now to push
00:19:58
their agenda forward to again reclaim
Sunday as democracy people have lost him
00:20:04
arrive. And now we're back to
00:20:08
a stage where we're almost
going to. Dictatorships. To be
00:20:13
a pain they've been to stop
dictatorship happening to regaining
00:20:20
freedoms and rights as
an assistant but Ms talk
00:20:23
a coma how does the European D help
Zambia Regi is democracy when your
00:20:29
leader refused to recognize the election
of the president through democratic means
00:20:35
. Other than have done things
now we're going through
00:20:39
a process of dialogue and that person that
enclose the issues of the election and
00:20:45
their issues or. Somebody or ever crams
the one so that. Thing must be put on
00:20:52
the table they have discussed. Well I
backed concrete solution so the process of
00:20:58
dialogue but us saying that Mr hit
00:21:01
a limit did not promise to recognize the
president as they precondition for his
00:21:07
release Were you don't know about any
promise you have not told us anything even
00:21:12
before you came out in order to not tell
us anything if there were any K.-Mart did
00:21:17
not talk about any promise so alone are
there issues or would go regime as to
00:21:23
a matter of speculation Minix today
very mistake promised to order
00:21:28
a press conference where issues will recall
an issue and and other issues including
00:21:33
the presidential guard issue I want to
be. A spokesman for is on the AS ME
00:21:39
opposition you P.N.D.
00:21:40
Party speaking with me from the capital
Lusaka A spokesman says the Zambian
00:21:45
president. Did not is says that of
additional legal haka individual him should
00:21:50
recognize his government as a
precondition for Mr Hitchens
00:21:54
a must release from prison yesterday
but most Chanda says it is
00:21:58
a requirement for the main opposition
candidate to acknowledge the outcome of the
00:22:02
trying to sixty election without exception
still Chunda says the decision to drop
00:22:08
the charges against Mr was pure. To choice
of the Director of Public Prosecutions
00:22:13
as mandated in
00:22:14
a zombie in the Constitution. That equal
public prosecution should win in the
00:22:21
criminal cases before court
power is remembered can detect
00:22:25
a Public Prosecution of when the mother
comes up for trial to continue with the
00:22:30
communiqué in these cases is that it
probably prosecution exercise that power
00:22:36
decided to discontinue the tape how can
that be justified when Mr had to limit
00:22:41
spent three or still months in jail and
then the public prosecutor decided to drop
00:22:47
the charges this indication that people
see your government did not have any
00:22:53
evidence to continue prosecuting Mr
chilly mom to Kenya to discontinue
00:22:59
a criminal case when my office actually
said he's furious freezes over debt except
00:23:05
for the prosecution a member of M.G.M.
00:23:07
Books she is also planning to explain how
and why she reached out to see just what
00:23:12
good boss even the events of the past two
weeks have minded dignitaries that came
00:23:19
to them and decided to visit the police
and neither one of them. Potentially
00:23:24
scopolamine the secretary general to come
on or he said if possible to leave in
00:23:31
sixteen election than before to lead
00:23:35
a ship to dial the police evolution of the
forms of difference and the hope of use
00:23:41
when this is
00:23:42
a gimmick where willing practice time
in process of support for the P.C.C.
00:23:47
In the action when the secretary general
she wanted to ensure that the dialogue and
00:23:52
that. The who comes from
00:23:56
a room to make plans for the thing that
golden rule then I am conducting Michonne
00:24:01
won't be on the table for will crack should
that be the agenda of the provision the
00:24:06
president does not problem with unit
tests so there was no way. Pro Corps is
00:24:11
themselves what they release from
00:24:14
a study to limit and then he recognized
the election of President the President
00:24:21
does not insist on the stage the medical
deny anything and that's neither here nor
00:24:26
there is normal to compare with somebody
may carry commission back if you require
00:24:32
them and that their position they know is
out of forensics team election which has
00:24:37
been dosed by the mention of it should not
be reversed at all without exception so
00:24:43
the president could of course that view
that what the that the center of the
00:24:48
sterile concrete bad blood between the
pollution the ruling party was the posturing
00:24:54
of their opposition that they do not mind
the outcome of the elections and from
00:25:00
their phone the district led them to do
certain things that then the problems
00:25:07
of the police or the prison service I can
point to what is problem before they
00:25:12
acknowledge that some reductions in most
Chanda spokesman for family and president
00:25:18
got longer who were speaking with me from
the capital Lusaka the Italian group come
00:25:24
a large association saw
00:25:25
a need for more beekeepers in northern Italy
and decided to train African migrants
00:25:31
and other refugees arriving in the country
to fill those positions Mara Alec was
00:25:36
president of the Association talked to
Ricky Shryock about the migrants who have
00:25:41
gotten jobs and the challenges that the
project. We we were trying to find
00:25:48
a solution that work that could be effective
to really push through to integrate
00:25:54
into our society find a job or and find
00:25:58
a place to leave the SO we found in beekeeping
or it would put to eighty to achieve
00:26:04
the city's. How many people have been trained
so far and how do the migrants react
00:26:11
to the training a lot of these
countries are coming from don't have
00:26:14
a culture of beekeeping so far in the three
years in Korea we have trained sixty
00:26:21
five my grandson and the first tee
and we have activated foot to foot
00:26:26
a training training ship or into we
keeping companies there my guns that have
00:26:32
access to the project or the guys from or
00:26:36
a little bit. From Africa but also
from like Gandhi some pockets
00:26:43
some Bhangra wish and they really
like the project or they are
00:26:47
a bit involved. In the profession and
training day doing the classes because the
00:26:53
class is given in an intensive way
speeds three three weeks one mountain
00:27:00
of back because inter because.
That is about lessons
00:27:06
about beekeeping are and also organic
agriculture and they are admitting will do
00:27:13
because they know that after the
training programme programme the. Good
00:27:18
opportunities through to getting fit.
In the labor market straight away after
00:27:25
training
00:27:25
a senior How many people that have gone
through the training have full time job in
00:27:31
the beekeeping industry now we have activated
the foot deferred training ship and
00:27:38
this training ship different
in duration from three MT sir.
00:27:44
Asked to fill so far because
this project is quite
00:27:49
a new project we can say
so far five people. Give
00:27:54
a job they have many said in the companies
and they work full time or the other
00:28:02
are doing things fulltime us about of
different duration the ones who have
00:28:08
a six seven eight month durations
00:28:10
a good salary Yes So they're saying she
received six hundred Europe that amount to
00:28:17
defective. Keeping said third and as
well come the Project for the last
00:28:24
of the keeper company they
supported the project X.
00:28:28
And even if it was not requested in the
even if you took not the. First seen by the
00:28:35
project most of them provided for the
accommodation that was Mara aliquot

00:30:03
Hello there today is Thursday August
seventeenth and this is video ways
00:30:07
international edition I'm Lori
London in Washington coming up
00:30:12
a community remembers a young
woman killed over the weekend in
00:30:15
a racially charged rally say to
yourself What can I do you to make
00:30:20
a difference and that is how you're going
to make my child's death worthwhile the
00:30:25
U.S.
00:30:25
In turmoil over race relations as outrage
continues over President Trump statements
00:30:31
millions of Americans
are preparing to watch
00:30:33
a rare total eclipse Also ahead remembering
the king of rock N roll Elvis Presley
00:30:39
it's all in today's international edition.
00:30:57
Huge crowd carrying candles and singing
filled the streets of downtown
00:31:02
Charlottesville Virginia
Wednesday night for
00:31:05
a vigil for thirty two year old
Heather hire a woman killed when
00:31:09
a Nazi sympathizer allegedly ran her down
with his car last Saturday fire was one
00:31:16
of hundreds of counter
protesters marching against
00:31:19
a white supremacist rally in the southern
college town friends family and mourners
00:31:24
gathered early Wednesday for
00:31:26
a memorial service for hire her
mother Susan Breaux struck
00:31:30
a defiant tone telling the crowd her
daughter's death would only serve to amplify
00:31:35
her message. And I think the reason that
what happened to have their has struck
00:31:40
a chord is because we know that what
she did is achievable we don't all
00:31:47
have to die we don't all have to sacrifice
our lives they tried to kill my child to
00:31:53
shut her up well guess what
you just magnified or.
00:31:59
Thank God there's father also
spoke. I came here today and I
00:32:06
was overwhelmed. Overwhelmed.
00:32:13
At the rainbow of colors in this room.
That's how Heather was. It didn't
00:32:20
matter who you where or where you were from
but she loved you that was it you were
00:32:25
stuck. So. For that.
00:32:32
I'm truly proud of my daughter. Also in
attendance Senator Tim Kaine he referred to
00:32:38
Virginia's troubled history with race
relations as he addressed reporters bridging
00:32:43
is
00:32:43
a place for scar tissue folks we've experienced
hatred we've experienced division and
00:32:49
we've experienced the racism that is
sad but the undeniable part of our
00:32:56
history but what we've come
a long way. We've come
00:33:00
a long way under unlikely
leadership we've come
00:33:02
a long way fighting back the divisions and
bigotries of past errors can also serve
00:33:09
who's also served as governor so the
Commonwealth of Virginia and the town of
00:33:12
Charlottesville have put away the evils
of the past and there are people who want
00:33:17
to bring us back to it many of them who are
not even from the Commonwealth but they
00:33:22
want to call us backward but what
Heather's life shows what this community
00:33:29
shows what Virginia shows is we're not
going back we will not go back to days of
00:33:34
hatred and bigotry and division
we're not going back and
00:33:38
a matter who tries to take us back on
00:33:40
a matter WHO emboldens those who would
try to take us back we are not going
00:33:44
backwards. He also criticized the
leadership of President Donald Trump saying
00:33:49
bigots have been emboldened by the
president's next messages on the tragedy the
00:33:54
president from continues to face
00:33:55
a barrage of criticism for his contention
that both white supremacists and counter
00:34:00
protesters were to blame for the deadly
violence Wednesday the president announced
00:34:05
that he dissolved two business advisory
committees composed of top American
00:34:09
corporate executives after at least seven
C.E.O.'s announced they were resigning
00:34:13
from the councils because of his remarks
as the violence unfolded last Saturday
00:34:18
Trump initially blamed it on many sides but
Monday he condemned the neo nazis white
00:34:24
supremacist and racist Ku Klux Klan for
their role in the on rest then on Tuesday
00:34:29
at
00:34:29
a news conference at his Trump Tower in New
York Trump reverted to his initial assessment
00:34:34
. The violence that killed one woman and
wounded nineteen others and joining me now
00:34:39
to discuss is to Hamal Lopez bin Yasi
assistant professor of conflict and
00:34:43
resolution at George Mason
University in the U.S.
00:34:46
State of Virginia so thank you for being
with us are you surprised at the rise in
00:34:51
white supremacist rallies taking place
here in this country I'm not surprised all
00:34:55
kinds of white supremacist call the white
nationalist neo nazis but the dominant
00:35:02
ideology here that binds them together is
that idea that white people are superior
00:35:07
either biologically culturally somehow
more deserving natural leaders whatever it
00:35:13
is and that you know they are the people
who should be in charge and these groups
00:35:18
have been around for centuries some of
them maybe this past century the neo nazis
00:35:24
certainly after World War two But just you
know really been since the civil rights
00:35:29
movement that they've taken mostly to the
shadows and in the past I'd say fifteen
00:35:36
plus years they've really exploded on the
internet so where you may not see the
00:35:42
type of congregations publicly of groups
like the Klan for example and they've had
00:35:48
their protests but they can congregate
online and they can grow online presence
00:35:52
from held
00:35:53
a news conference like none I've ever seen
apparently is AIDS didn't know he was
00:35:57
going to take questions can you give me
some perspective on what you make of all of
00:36:01
that the comments that he that he made you
know it is very hard to make sense of
00:36:06
many things that he says I mean he is truly
right off the cuff surprises I seems
00:36:12
like everyone who's around
him all together he's always
00:36:15
a trump the premises that he's he thinks
he is the best thing since sliced bread
00:36:21
and within you know that trump
supremacy he doesn't have
00:36:24
a challenge against you know
white supremacy doesn't have
00:36:27
a challenge against sexism are able
to is and he's he's the possessor of
00:36:32
a great privilege and. He is not the
defender of any kind of minority in this
00:36:37
country the president did say he believed
that there was less racism since he's
00:36:43
taken office in this country it doesn't
seem to match some of the statistics of
00:36:47
some of the watchdog groups that have been
doing some analysis on the pool I was
00:36:51
taking a look at F.B.I.
00:36:53
Statistics and the numbers for like single
biased incidents have seem to kind of
00:36:58
ANY SENSE find in some cases they've
declined since twenty tends like year seven
00:37:02
thousand to like five thousand eight hundred
twenty fifteen that's the most recent
00:37:07
full reports but we know maybe an unofficial
capacity that there have been all
00:37:12
kinds of incidents in twenty sixteen and
you know into the years of the campaign
00:37:16
election and what's notable I think and
what's important is that we've seen
00:37:22
a slight decrease in the kinds of anti-black
hate crimes you know the two lower
00:37:29
sixty percent to below fifty percent which
means that there are there are more
00:37:33
incidents against people of you know let's
you know dissent people who you know
00:37:38
would be categorized as Asian descent but
mainly the talking about you know people
00:37:41
who might be read as Arab or Muslim so
the kinds of hate is probably being more
00:37:48
widely dispersed but always with the most
against blacks it's interesting because
00:37:53
you know the president of the United
States also you know he has of
00:37:55
a daughter that's Jewish
00:37:56
a son in law that's Jewish and yet he
seemed to indicate in his press conference
00:38:00
that the reason he didn't come out
stronger and same more during his first
00:38:05
statement was that he didn't have all the
facts but there were clearly swastikas
00:38:10
being held and people chanting anti Semitic
comments and I think what's plain and
00:38:16
simple too I think most decent people who
believe in equality they recognize those
00:38:22
things as you know malicious and I don't
think he does but actually since he's been
00:38:28
you know the proponent really you know of
the birth the risen against Obama he he
00:38:34
doesn't. Not care at all about what these
comments that he says about Muslims about
00:38:38
immigrants from generally about Mexicans
he's not concerned I mean he had such
00:38:43
a gut reaction to the most ridiculous
things like you know bad now thing somebody
00:38:47
like you know an actress or something quite
like Meryl Streep but he doesn't have
00:38:52
a great reaction to what you write
supremacy. Do you think this is always been
00:38:57
brewing in our country the white supremacy
but that they're somehow feeling
00:39:02
emboldened from coming out or do you think
that they're recruiting more people
00:39:05
white supremacy has been as an ideology has
been I say alive and well just depends
00:39:11
on you know how public it's been but you
know for most of our for most of our
00:39:14
history it wasn't even like
00:39:17
a question about whether or not white people
were better that really does come into
00:39:20
question with the civil rights movement
00:39:22
a little bit beforehand but I think I
think what's happening is like you know
00:39:26
you're seeing
00:39:27
a big split and we've seen this the United
States you know along partisan lines is
00:39:31
that you have probably more aggressive and
more successful recruiting strategies
00:39:36
for this now we're calling it the all right
but you know white supremacist faction
00:39:41
but we're also seeing I think what's
interesting is more and more white people who
00:39:47
are who are you know publicly protesting
against these groups and who are you
00:39:53
know in some way trying to become supporters
of black lives matter and in support
00:39:59
of immigration reform and so I think it's
an interesting time to study whiteness
00:40:04
because there's like this cleavage
that's occurring along I lines of racial
00:40:08
ideology do you believe in white supremacy
and think that this is the way that you
00:40:12
know the United States should continue
to be because this is what we've been
00:40:15
fighting against for several decades
and we're going through some really
00:40:19
interesting growing pains in this country
and the sad part about that is that the
00:40:23
people who are taking up the opposite side
there seem to be very little place for
00:40:29
discourse and I'm afraid that when you lose
space for discourse that you give. Hali
00:40:34
a disproportionate amount of space to the
possibility of people OK parents against
00:40:38
each other I don't want to see that in my
country. While I don't think any of us do
00:40:43
to him alone has been Yasi assistant
professor of Conflict Resolution at George
00:40:48
Mason University thank you for your your
time turning now to what's trending on
00:40:52
social media we're joined by Andrew pal
cesky handrail what's going on well we have
00:40:57
two follow ups to stories that we've talked
about in the past couple days OK first
00:41:01
as
00:41:01
a follow up to President Obama's tweet he
tweeted out about the protests going on in
00:41:06
Charlottesville we said that tweet was
rapidly becoming one of the most popular
00:41:11
tweets ever well now it is the
most liked tweet ever why
00:41:18
passed the tweet by Ariana Grande day the
singer sent out after the attack outside
00:41:23
her concert in Manchester in the U.K.
00:41:26
Ariana Grande ace tweet had two point seven
million likes President Obama's tweet
00:41:31
surpassed that and not only to surpass
that kept going it's nearing four million
00:41:36
likes so out of people rallying around
this on social media it's become kind of
00:41:41
a way for people to express their opposition
and Horenstein to the white supremacy
00:41:48
the neo nazis and it's going on in
Charlottesville so this is really gone viral in
00:41:53
the biggest way as
00:41:54
a way of people to really express this
and express frustration and anger and
00:41:59
sadness by endorsing liking and retreating
this tweet meant and that tweet by the
00:42:05
way
00:42:05
a quote from Nelson Mandela Yes the quote
is no one is born hating another person
00:42:10
because of the color of their skin or his
background or his religion and actually
00:42:15
that's one of three tweets that the
president former president sent out he
00:42:19
continued that quote on it goes on for
00:42:21
a little longer and each of the
subsequent tweets have over
00:42:24
a million likes and over three hundred
fifty thousand retreats for each of them
00:42:29
anything else happening
yet another follow up to
00:42:31
a story that we talked about which was the
dock. Singh as they call it it's when
00:42:36
people can find your information online and
release it publicly so we talked about
00:42:40
how white supremacists were being docs to
having their information released after
00:42:44
those rallies in Charlottesville when they
were identified in those photos Well now
00:42:47
social media companies are actually stepping
up and they're helping to fight white
00:42:52
supremacy and racism and all of these ugly
things online but they're doing it in
00:42:57
a bit of
00:42:57
a more structured way than people docs
ing in releasing information and social
00:43:01
media companies like Facebook and Reddit
have both announced that they're removing
00:43:05
neo nazi and white supremacists content
they're removing links to content that is
00:43:09
racist from their sites so they're taking
00:43:12
a big step up to remove hate speech of
course this is something we've talked about
00:43:15
more in
00:43:16
a context of people trying to use social
media to recruit or get other people to
00:43:22
involve themselves in terrorism overseas
this is an instance where they're
00:43:26
confronting hate speech here in the United
States and it's interesting not just
00:43:31
with the timing of what happened in
Charlottesville but a new report from
00:43:35
a professor at Virginia Tech saying that
online rhetoric particularly on social
00:43:39
media is actually contributing to the rise
of hate groups and violence in real life
00:43:45
so perhaps stopping that at the source
with social media will stop it from
00:43:49
spreading stop these groups from rallying
and getting together this is something I
00:43:53
actually talked about in my digital daily
video series so for listeners want to

to break all diplomatic and commercial
00:45:25
ties with North Korea we truly believe
that it's imperative that the regime in
00:45:32
Pyongyang understand that all options are
on the take the United States of America
00:45:37
will simply not permit
00:45:39
a rogue regime in North Korea to possess
usable nuclear weapons that can reach the

First. To come on our joy. Not only son I.
00:47:24
Feel his international edition continues
the sun moon and earth will line up
00:47:29
perfectly in the cosmos on August
twenty first turning day into night for
00:47:34
a few wondrous minutes its path crossing
the US from sea to shining sea for the
00:47:39
first time in nearly
00:47:40
a century it will be watched by millions
Joining me for more on this special events
00:47:46
of a total eclipse is NASA. Yet for
00:47:48
a potion lab and Bassett are great Redfern
this does not happen often does it for
00:47:54
any one particular of the earth as an average
about once every three hundred years
00:48:00
a total solar eclipse will be
00:48:01
a bailable or visible thing that makes its
eclipse on August twenty first in the
00:48:07
United States so unique is two things one
it is Totality is going to last from the
00:48:14
time the moon's shadow comes on two
continents in Oregon when it exits
00:48:21
the state of South Carolina and during that
four hours it's ality It's estimated as
00:48:26
much as over two hundred million Americans
could travel and see totality this is
00:48:32
expect to be the most do Eclipse and all
of history Wow Fascinating So where
00:48:38
exactly will it be visible there are
fourteen states that have what shall be
00:48:43
passing through them and I said it starts
in Oregon only this way on down and your
00:48:49
listeners can go to nasa dot and
click on the links that are up
00:48:56
there about the eclipse and one thing I
want to say well if your listeners are
00:49:02
traveling the United States and they think
they're going to be trying to see the
00:49:05
eclipse they want to
make sure that they buy
00:49:08
a solar eclipse glasses and NASA has got
00:49:12
a vendor list of saved and approved solar
eclipse glasses that's the only way to
00:49:18
safety watch this eclipse site and here is
the glory if your listeners can't get to
00:49:24
the Internet or social media NASA is going
to be broadcasting the live the entire
00:49:31
clips from one It starts when it finishes
and that's going to include views from
00:49:36
the International Space Station it's going
to include views from high altitude
00:49:41
balloon and my favorite There are two B.
00:49:46
Fifty seven talks Trotter ass jet that.
Going to be flying and chasing them moon
00:49:51
shadow special telescope to observe the
sun and to observe the time at Mercury
00:49:58
but what about the people like
say here in Washington D.C.
00:50:01
That won't get
00:50:02
a totally clips will we still get to see
something yes you will totality is only
00:50:07
over fourteen states and it's
00:50:09
a mile wide swath everywhere else in the
United States Canada and Mexico it's
00:50:14
a partial solar eclipse in Washington D.C.
00:50:17
We're roughly going to be at about eighty
five or so percent it depends on where
00:50:22
you are and on that massive DOT website
they have an interactive map that you can
00:50:28
precisely pinpoint where you are and click
on where you live or visiting and bring
00:50:34
up how much of the sun is going to be
eclipsed what time does it start for you when
00:50:39
is the greatest amount of Eclipse and one
is that and how high it is in the sky one
00:50:43
stop shop and frame but he wants to see the
eclipse we won't see in Washington D.C.
00:50:49
a Great darkening it's going to look
a little odd the shadow might be
00:50:56
a little bit different but you really have
to get into the upper ninety percentile
00:51:02
of the sun being eclipse to start seeing
brighter stars come out being able to see
00:51:07
the planets and being able to see where
there's smoke shadow is racing across the
00:51:14
earth's surface to Philip it's really
cool and the last time that we had the
00:51:19
eclipse coming across the entire United
States Laurie was ninety nine years ago
00:51:25
June eighth Wow So this is
00:51:27
a special thing in the last
total solar eclipse on the U.S.
00:51:33
One thousand seventy nine and what makes
is this story and why people are calling
00:51:39
it The Great American eclipse is this is
the first time in American history that
00:51:46
clips is coming onto. American soil
and the totality is only visible and
00:51:53
American for American history All right
thanks so much for the info that's NASA Jet
00:51:59
Propulsion Lab and Bassett are very grand
for and remember if you are nowhere near
00:52:04
seeing the eclipse in person you can see
it at nasa dot gov Wednesday marks forty
00:52:10
years since the legendary king of rock N
roll Elvis Presley died at his home in
00:52:15
Memphis at the age of forty two as he
always David Bird tells us fans around the
00:52:20
world are remembering Presley one of the
high in years of rock music Well this is
00:52:25
my little bed little fellow
to play with. Was devoted.
00:52:32
To. Elvis Presley took the world by
storm in the one nine hundred fifty S.
00:52:39
Shaking and gyrating on stage melting girls
hearts with his charismatic good looks
00:52:44
and his curled upper lip Elvis was born
into poverty in Tupelo Mississippi but rose
00:52:50
to stardom on the heels of songs like
Heartbreak Hotel hound dog Blue Suede Shoes
00:52:56
and Love Me Tender Elvis died of complications
from drug use and heart problems on
00:53:01
August sixteenth one thousand nine hundred
seventy seven cents his death fans have
00:53:05
flocked to his Graceland mansion in Memphis
to pay tribute to their hero this year
00:53:11
fans will be able to pay nearly twenty
nine dollars to join the procession to the
00:53:16
Presley family grave
site they will also get
00:53:19
a glimpse of the newly built entertainment
complex which replaced older exhibits
00:53:24
featuring Elvis his cars costumes
and memorabilia Angela tow is
00:53:30
a tourist from Michigan. You
know he had so many employees.
00:53:38
It was R. And B.
00:53:38
It was. Naturally Molly Kendall and her
family drove hours to see the mansion and
00:53:45
to pay tribute to preciously It's crazy
how the. Busy this place is today forty
00:53:50
years later. I think we. Have four hours
to get through this to read today because
00:53:56
of all the people. Listen. To.
00:54:04
Her. In Manila the Philippines several
Elvis impersonators took to the
00:54:11
stage to pay tribute to the music legend
Eddie Lombardo is the Elvis of Italy we're
00:54:17
not trying to duplicate Elvis was nobody
can be Elvis with anyone else as you know
00:54:22
and we're trying to bring the memory of
Elvis back to people especially what we're
00:54:26
doing Douglas Massud other self described
Elvis of Japan says he hopes to
00:54:30
communicate the spirit of Presley's music
so you say oh I feel you know when I sing
00:54:37
well I'm not all that all of I always I
probably don't sound like him but I feel
00:54:42
this. Song if I feel it you feel
it bam I'm paying is described as
00:54:48
a young Elvis sensation
he says that Presley was
00:54:52
a ground breaker for generations of artists
Elvis kind of like banging down the
00:54:57
door to everyone so conservative or yet
Frank Sinatra that he said they were also
00:55:02
conservative and then there's this guy
shaking his head so. That started everything
00:55:07
but I think for everyone Elvis Presley
ranked fourth in Forbes magazine's twenty
00:55:12
sixteen list of top earning dead celebrities
that's not bad but it paled compared
00:55:18
to another king King of Pop Michael Jackson
who earned eight hundred twenty five
00:55:24
million dollars last year in

a wonderful day. Next
00:56:46
an editorial reflecting the views of the
United States government it's been nine
00:56:51
years since Russia recognized the Georgian
territories of Abkhazia and South
00:56:55
Ossetia as independent
states after Russia waged
00:56:59
a brief but deadly war with Georgia in
two thousand eight hundred died and more
00:57:04
than one hundred ninety thousand people
were displaced in the five day conflict as
00:57:08
Russian troops advanced into Georgia only
00:57:11
a handful of countries recognize the
so-called independence of the two Georgian
00:57:15
territories which in fact remain firmly
under Russian economic and military control
00:57:20
even to the point of Moscow's integrating
members of its armed forces with those of
00:57:24
South Ossetia the United States and
Georgia consider both Abkhazia and South
00:57:29
Ossetia to be occupied Georgian territory
the Georgian government accuses Russia of
00:57:34

that Russia responsibly guarantees the

security and independence of Abkhazia and
expressed confidence that this will be so
00:58:03
in the future as well NATO is acting

NATO support for Georgia's sovereignty
00:58:18

of the European Union to Georgia published
00:58:23
a similar denunciation State Department
spokesperson Heather Nauert called the
00:58:27
visit by Putin to the occupied Georgian
territory inappropriate and inconsistent
00:58:32
with the principles underlying the Geneva
International discussions to which Russia
00:58:37

of the Georgian regions of qazi and
00:58:56
South Ossetia in the meantime as vice
president Mike Pence made clear in his recent
00:59:01
visit to the B.B.C.
00:59:03
The United States will continue to look for
ways that we can strengthen Georgia not
00:59:07
only from the standpoint of its defense
and security but where we can strengthen
00:59:11
Georgia economically creating jobs and
opportunity and prosperity and strengthening
00:59:16
the hand of Georgia so that one day Georgia
can once again celebrate its historic
00:59:21
territorial integrity intact. But it was

00:05:04
Good morning everyone welcome to DAYBREAK
Africa from the Voice of America I'm
00:05:07

August seventeenth and here are some of
00:05:12
this the reason we're covering. Mass
funerals today for some of the victims of
00:05:16
Monday's must. Continues for the missing.
00:05:24
Morning that we have drawn them in.
00:05:31
One on forty. From the wreckage of. A
00:05:38
spokesman for President Ernest Bai Koroma
Nigeria's demand their president return
00:05:43
home to resume work all resigned the
number of candidates in today's Liberia
00:05:48
presidential election debate is less two
and Zambia's me opposition party there was
00:05:54
no quid pro quo yesterday released
from prison of his leader.
00:06:01
But.
00:06:15
Spokesman for Zambians me opposition
party and some newly arriving African
00:06:20
immigrants in Italy get training
at beekeepers those there was also
00:06:24
a listen of the day are
coming up on DAYBREAK Africa.
00:06:34
The government will today Thursday carry
out mass burials full of some of the
00:06:39
victims of Monday's must lie as the search
continues for the estimated six hundred
00:06:43
more still believed to be missing there
it is spokesman for President Ernest Bai
00:06:49
Koroma says over three hundred bodies have
been recovered so far he says President
00:06:55
will attend. Paris which will take place
near the city of Waterloo about twenty
00:07:00
miles east of the capital Freetown seen
yesterday morning we have been receiving
00:07:07
families that the men cannot speak
of much worry after we put out
00:07:11
a statement that we wanted them to identify
their loved one so that if they wanted
00:07:17
bodies. On the our own we can give
them that opportunity apparently
00:07:24
some came to identify their loved
ones they prayed with them gave them
00:07:29
a last respect and eventually the and they
drove across the game to the government
00:07:35
that this was the government that they
took him to be around that was going to
00:07:39
happen later today so as I'm speaking to
you now although mortalities are being put
00:07:46
in place will be taken this cop safe.
Told this morning the latest to go we
00:07:52
have from the man cannot speak to ace three
hundred and thirty one bodies that we
00:07:59
have recovered from wreckage of
the disaster and events talented
00:08:04
a president of cause it will be in water
which is about twenty miles away from
00:08:09
three thousand and bosses have also been
provided for debris families and all that
00:08:14
when we should particularly
when we have also instituted
00:08:18
a seven days national mourning so
00:08:20
a lot of people are going to sympathize
with what is generally believed to be
00:08:25
a national tragedy Mr Barrett in
the wake of today's mass barrier.
00:08:33
An indication mount that the search and
rescue is over because one account I'm
00:08:39
reading is that as many as maybe six
hundred to nine hundred people might be
00:08:45
accounted for well it is for the very reason
that you rightly said that we are not
00:08:52
acquainted or can. Catch them
arrest. So this morning as we are
00:08:58
preparing for the barrier we can still see
Ambulante toward the mortuary green to
00:09:05
mean party so this is where we have to
continue in the rescue operation and we have
00:09:11
a very optimistic that down the road we
might be able to look at life because the
00:09:17
good news stories of the so five hours
we have in our videos hospitals that are
00:09:23
very indications that. Via
valleys ninety percent how close
00:09:29
is your government about
the possibility of
00:09:34
a disease outbreak because this is minute
season we have very much concern we have
00:09:40
activated a level three
security apparatus which is
00:09:44
a military aid to the whole community we
have also walked in with many soft health
00:09:50
and sanitation I mean one of the
people as well as published as part of
00:09:54
a quality need to respond we have to water
had and sanitation and hygiene people
00:10:00
which is very key and as I'm speaking
to you now we have gone to the affected
00:10:05
communities just to make sure that preventive
measures are being put in place. At
00:10:11
the liabilities
00:10:12
a spokesman for civil and President Ernest
Bai Koroma speaking with me from the
00:10:17
capital Freetown Nigerian president Mohammad
duble Hariri has be in London since
00:10:22
May this year seeking treatment full and

Nigerians are growing impatient an online

seventh during both of his absences Bihari
00:11:01
has followed the Constitution temporarily
passing executive power to his vice
00:11:07
president citizen say it is time
for the Nigerian president to make
00:11:11
a decision either get back to work or
step down the president. Was right it
00:11:18
was up this street rally on Tuesday is one
of several that have been conducted in
00:11:25
the capital of Abuja over the past week
participants carried banners with bold
00:11:30
words printed resume or resign the slogan
stems from the hash tag campaign that
00:11:36
started online earlier this month and
quickly spread in Lagos and there have also
00:11:42
been street demonstrations on Tuesday in
the resume resigned activists entered an
00:11:48
open market and came face to face with
the market traders many of whom are avid
00:11:54
supporters of President Bihari was
00:11:57
the sable Hari Sable Hari the pro-ball
00:12:04
Hari supporters began chanting it
means only Bihari in the local house
00:12:10
a language. Each VO way so pro Biharis
supporters began beating the resume or
00:12:15
resigned activist local newspaper reporter
diary Richards said he had to seek
00:12:21
medical treatment after the
Tuesday rally. Nigerians are
00:12:28
divided over the issue but the calls for
resignation are getting louder Hillary
00:12:33
many and as a president is just
00:12:35
a virus to the country as well because he
is someone sick for the first time on his
00:12:40
P.C.
00:12:41
He should be allowed to call then come back
on can see new being praised things and
00:12:46
we love him. It is only in this country
it bridges that and would like to rule on
00:12:53
it are welcome to like this from another
country I mean it is but we have minimal
00:12:59
what is going on without for him to resign
and faces heads as round of our power to
00:13:04
his vice. Devise with the baton V.P.
00:13:08
Yemi ocean by Joe has been an active acting
president he has carried out the daily
00:13:13
duties of state and he has been pushing
an economic agenda to attract foreign
00:13:18
investors in hopes of lifting Africa's
most populous nation out of its recession
00:13:24
last week Bihari announced that he is ready
to return from London and is waiting
00:13:29
for his doctor's approval though the
Nigerian people remain in the dark about the
00:13:34
president's exact state of health his
advisers and the first lady say he is
00:13:39
recovering and doing fine but there is
much doubt Nigeria's Constitution requires
00:13:46
a two thirds vote of the president's
cabinet as well as confirmation by medical
00:13:50
panel that the president is quote incapable
of discharging the functions of his
00:13:56
office end quote before he could
be removed what do we want. They
00:14:03
say they'll continue protesting in the
streets until the president returns to

Nigeria Chico dua for V.O.A.
00:14:10
News. Here listening to daybreak Africa
and the Voice of America and James but in
00:14:15
Washington today is Thursday August seventeenth
DAYBREAK Africa time forty minutes
00:14:20
past the hour organizers of today's six
candidates debate in Liberia's October
00:14:26
tenth presidential election said the number
of participants has been reduced by two
00:14:31
the debate is expected to focus on six
issues of concern to the Liberian people
00:14:36
including the economy security and
rule of law peace and reconciliation
00:14:41
anti-corruption policy agriculture and you
for empowerment the public is to make
00:14:47
the kind of does this cause issues rather
than personalities let me go oh is
00:14:52
a member of the deepening democracy coalition
the group that is organizing today's
00:14:57
presidential debate he says the two
candidates who will not be participating in
00:15:02
today's debate Senator George Weah of the
Coalition for Democratic Change and from
00:15:07
a national bank governor Jay Mills who
is the presidential candidate of the
00:15:12
movement for economic
empowerment party. Yesterday.
00:15:19
Disability Mr Joyce we are anticipating.
That he will not be patented by The
00:15:26
Who can participate in.
This misuses all. Contact.
00:15:33
In
00:15:33
a little part of the country and. What is
the reason for Senator we are not wanting
00:15:39
to participate or
00:15:40
a condo while he is campaigning. To
leave us with the letter and we send
00:15:47
our invitation to. People of his
area yesterday that we would
00:15:54
have never seen him. Here are you planning
on having another presidential debate
00:16:01
well or will an election will
be only. For this one and
00:16:08
only. Generally. In these wars.
00:16:16
You said that the vice president Mr Black-Eyed
and the rest of the other people are
00:16:21
going to participate that. He will. Be
00:16:27
a politician. Or to be I would not likely
is this is first time that such a D.
00:16:33
Bit
00:16:34
a presidential candidate is going to be taken
place for this election I still. Believe
00:16:41
. In what I mean historically Army has
there be any presidential debate our
00:16:47
historic presidential. Father will be
able to get in this debate as he has his
00:16:54
history will. Have Been
will be. Very interesting.
00:17:02
Mr Taylor will eventually want participate
in or. Participate in the way
00:17:09
the major wars. The. Kinship
of evaluation particularly
00:17:16
these along. Let me go as
00:17:20
a member of the deepening democracy coalition
the group that is organizing first
00:17:24
this presidential debate in Liberia
speaking with me from the capital Monrovia
00:17:29
Zambia's main opposition party the united
party for national development you P.N.D.
00:17:35
Says there was no quid pro quo yesterday's
release from prison of this leader haka
00:17:40
in the his dilemma he had been charged
with treason for failing to make way for
00:17:44
president. Motorcade there were rumors that
the government was planted to drop the
00:17:50
charges if Mr Hayes dillema would recognize
President as their legitimate president
00:17:55
but on Wednesday the Director of Public
Prosecutions dropped the charges without
00:18:00
giving a reason. Spokesman for
the opposition you P.N.D.
00:18:04
Party says Mr He told him I will hold
00:18:06
a news conference in the
next few days to address
00:18:09
a number of issues in. Today whether to
recognize dilute the government on and were
00:18:14
happy large a particular event
have been relieved and today was
00:18:18
a great day for our party people have
been celebrating dancing and some of them
00:18:25
crying to joy and so on from the high
caught up to the prison facility
00:18:32
what has
00:18:33
a name to the president's
house. So I ask you the other
00:18:40
day yesterday or so why was
he released was there and
00:18:44
a deal made for him to be released was
very unsettled prevented him called to
00:18:49
a director probably
perfect solutions cited
00:18:52
a provision in the question that. She had
00:18:59
power to be in
00:19:01
a case giving rebels no reasons and some
of the nation was under that. Citing that
00:19:08
she could be. An absolute zero
power or indeed due to Maui
00:19:15
administration of public interest
and those of any other. State
00:19:21
ever the three Mr had to limit this speak
to his supporters and I understand that
00:19:28
he thinks that now is the time than be to
move forward what does that mean can he
00:19:33
be interpreted to me that tell he's
willing to work with the government well
00:19:39
everybody was following them and positive
Can you see that what I reckon today is
00:19:44
just one step towards the breeding
of democracy in the kind of lives
00:19:51
that was mostly only important event in
the. Politics what is needed now to push
00:19:58
their agenda forward to again reclaim
Sunday as democracy people have lost him
00:20:04
arrive. And now we're back to
00:20:08
a stage where we're almost
going to. Dictatorships. To be
00:20:13
a pain they've been to stop
dictatorship happening to regaining
00:20:20
freedoms and rights as
an assistant but Ms talk
00:20:23
a coma how does the European D help
Zambia Regi is democracy when your
00:20:29
leader refused to recognize the election
of the president through democratic means
00:20:35
. Other than have done things
now we're going through
00:20:39
a process of dialogue and that person that
enclose the issues of the election and
00:20:45
their issues or. Somebody or ever crams
the one so that. Thing must be put on
00:20:52
the table they have discussed. Well I
backed concrete solution so the process of
00:20:58
dialogue but us saying that Mr hit
00:21:01
a limit did not promise to recognize the
president as they precondition for his
00:21:07
release Were you don't know about any
promise you have not told us anything even
00:21:12
before you came out in order to not tell
us anything if there were any K.-Mart did
00:21:17
not talk about any promise so alone are
there issues or would go regime as to
00:21:23
a matter of speculation Minix today
very mistake promised to order
00:21:28
a press conference where issues will recall
an issue and and other issues including
00:21:33
the presidential guard issue I want to
be. A spokesman for is on the AS ME
00:21:39
opposition you P.N.D.
00:21:40
Party speaking with me from the capital
Lusaka A spokesman says the Zambian
00:21:45
president. Did not is says that of
additional legal haka individual him should
00:21:50
recognize his government as a
precondition for Mr Hitchens
00:21:54
a must release from prison yesterday
but most Chanda says it is
00:21:58
a requirement for the main opposition
candidate to acknowledge the outcome of the
00:22:02
trying to sixty election without exception
still Chunda says the decision to drop
00:22:08
the charges against Mr was pure. To choice
of the Director of Public Prosecutions
00:22:13
as mandated in
00:22:14
a zombie in the Constitution. That equal
public prosecution should win in the
00:22:21
criminal cases before court
power is remembered can detect
00:22:25
a Public Prosecution of when the mother
comes up for trial to continue with the
00:22:30
communiqué in these cases is that it
probably prosecution exercise that power
00:22:36
decided to discontinue the tape how can
that be justified when Mr had to limit
00:22:41
spent three or still months in jail and
then the public prosecutor decided to drop
00:22:47
the charges this indication that people
see your government did not have any
00:22:53
evidence to continue prosecuting Mr
chilly mom to Kenya to discontinue
00:22:59
a criminal case when my office actually
said he's furious freezes over debt except
00:23:05
for the prosecution a member of M.G.M.
00:23:07
Books she is also planning to explain how
and why she reached out to see just what
00:23:12
good boss even the events of the past two
weeks have minded dignitaries that came
00:23:19
to them and decided to visit the police
and neither one of them. Potentially
00:23:24
scopolamine the secretary general to come
on or he said if possible to leave in
00:23:31
sixteen election than before to lead
00:23:35
a ship to dial the police evolution of the
forms of difference and the hope of use
00:23:41
when this is
00:23:42
a gimmick where willing practice time
in process of support for the P.C.C.
00:23:47
In the action when the secretary general
she wanted to ensure that the dialogue and
00:23:52
that. The who comes from
00:23:56
a room to make plans for the thing that
golden rule then I am conducting Michonne
00:24:01
won't be on the table for will crack should
that be the agenda of the provision the
00:24:06
president does not problem with unit
tests so there was no way. Pro Corps is
00:24:11
themselves what they release from
00:24:14
a study to limit and then he recognized
the election of President the President
00:24:21
does not insist on the stage the medical
deny anything and that's neither here nor
00:24:26
there is normal to compare with somebody
may carry commission back if you require
00:24:32
them and that their position they know is
out of forensics team election which has
00:24:37
been dosed by the mention of it should not
be reversed at all without exception so
00:24:43
the president could of course that view
that what the that the center of the
00:24:48
sterile concrete bad blood between the
pollution the ruling party was the posturing
00:24:54
of their opposition that they do not mind
the outcome of the elections and from
00:25:00
their phone the district led them to do
certain things that then the problems
00:25:07
of the police or the prison service I can
point to what is problem before they
00:25:12
acknowledge that some reductions in most
Chanda spokesman for family and president
00:25:18
got longer who were speaking with me from
the capital Lusaka the Italian group come
00:25:24
a large association saw
00:25:25
a need for more beekeepers in northern Italy
and decided to train African migrants
00:25:31
and other refugees arriving in the country
to fill those positions Mara Alec was
00:25:36
president of the Association talked to
Ricky Shryock about the migrants who have
00:25:41
gotten jobs and the challenges that the
project. We we were trying to find
00:25:48
a solution that work that could be effective
to really push through to integrate
00:25:54
into our society find a job or and find
00:25:58
a place to leave the SO we found in beekeeping
or it would put to eighty to achieve
00:26:04
the city's. How many people have been trained
so far and how do the migrants react
00:26:11
to the training a lot of these
countries are coming from don't have
00:26:14
a culture of beekeeping so far in the three
years in Korea we have trained sixty
00:26:21
five my grandson and the first tee
and we have activated foot to foot
00:26:26
a training training ship or into we
keeping companies there my guns that have
00:26:32
access to the project or the guys from or
00:26:36
a little bit. From Africa but also
from like Gandhi some pockets
00:26:43
some Bhangra wish and they really
like the project or they are
00:26:47
a bit involved. In the profession and
training day doing the classes because the
00:26:53
class is given in an intensive way
speeds three three weeks one mountain
00:27:00
of back because inter because.
That is about lessons
00:27:06
about beekeeping are and also organic
agriculture and they are admitting will do
00:27:13
because they know that after the
training programme programme the. Good
00:27:18
opportunities through to getting fit.
In the labor market straight away after
00:27:25
training
00:27:25
a senior How many people that have gone
through the training have full time job in
00:27:31
the beekeeping industry now we have activated
the foot deferred training ship and
00:27:38
this training ship different
in duration from three MT sir.
00:27:44
Asked to fill so far because
this project is quite
00:27:49
a new project we can say
so far five people. Give
00:27:54
a job they have many said in the companies
and they work full time or the other
00:28:02
are doing things fulltime us about of
different duration the ones who have
00:28:08
a six seven eight month durations
00:28:10
a good salary Yes So they're saying she
received six hundred Europe that amount to
00:28:17
defective. Keeping said third and as
well come the Project for the last
00:28:24
of the keeper company they
supported the project X.
00:28:28
And even if it was not requested in the
even if you took not the. First seen by the
00:28:35
project most of them provided for the
accommodation that was Mara aliquot
00:28:42
president of the Cambalache Association
speaking to reconstruct from Alice Andrea
00:28:47
Italy. Briefly before leaving summary of
Africa new the Syrian government will

00:30:03
Hello there today is Thursday August
seventeenth and this is video ways
00:30:07
international edition I'm Lori
London in Washington coming up
00:30:12
a community remembers a young
woman killed over the weekend in
00:30:15
a racially charged rally say to
yourself What can I do you to make
00:30:20
a difference and that is how you're going
to make my child's death worthwhile the
00:30:25
U.S.
00:30:25
In turmoil over race relations as outrage
continues over President Trump statements
00:30:31
millions of Americans
are preparing to watch
00:30:33
a rare total eclipse Also ahead remembering
the king of rock N roll Elvis Presley
00:30:39
it's all in today's international edition.
00:30:57
Huge crowd carrying candles and singing
filled the streets of downtown
00:31:02
Charlottesville Virginia
Wednesday night for
00:31:05
a vigil for thirty two year old
Heather hire a woman killed when
00:31:09
a Nazi sympathizer allegedly ran her down
with his car last Saturday fire was one
00:31:16
of hundreds of counter
protesters marching against
00:31:19
a white supremacist rally in the southern
college town friends family and mourners
00:31:24
gathered early Wednesday for
00:31:26
a memorial service for hire her
mother Susan Breaux struck
00:31:30
a defiant tone telling the crowd her
daughter's death would only serve to amplify
00:31:35
her message. And I think the reason that
what happened to have their has struck
00:31:40
a chord is because we know that what
she did is achievable we don't all
00:31:47
have to die we don't all have to sacrifice
our lives they tried to kill my child to
00:31:53
shut her up well guess what
you just magnified or.
00:31:59
Thank God there's father also
spoke. I came here today and I
00:32:06
was overwhelmed. Overwhelmed.
00:32:13
At the rainbow of colors in this room.
That's how Heather was. It didn't
00:32:20
matter who you where or where you were from
but she loved you that was it you were
00:32:25
stuck. So. For that.
00:32:32
I'm truly proud of my daughter. Also in
attendance Senator Tim Kaine he referred to
00:32:38
Virginia's troubled history with race
relations as he addressed reporters bridging
00:32:43
is
00:32:43
a place for scar tissue folks we've experienced
hatred we've experienced division and
00:32:49
we've experienced the racism that is
sad but the undeniable part of our
00:32:56
history but what we've come
a long way. We've come
00:33:00
a long way under unlikely
leadership we've come
00:33:02
a long way fighting back the divisions and
bigotries of past errors can also serve
00:33:09
who's also served as governor so the
Commonwealth of Virginia and the town of
00:33:12
Charlottesville have put away the evils
of the past and there are people who want
00:33:17
to bring us back to it many of them who are
not even from the Commonwealth but they
00:33:22
want to call us backward but what
Heather's life shows what this community
00:33:29
shows what Virginia shows is we're not
going back we will not go back to days of
00:33:34
hatred and bigotry and division
we're not going back and
00:33:38
a matter who tries to take us back on
00:33:40
a matter WHO emboldens those who would
try to take us back we are not going
00:33:44
backwards. He also criticized the
leadership of President Donald Trump saying
00:33:49
bigots have been emboldened by the
president's next messages on the tragedy the
00:33:54
president from continues to face
00:33:55
a barrage of criticism for his contention
that both white supremacists and counter
00:34:00
protesters were to blame for the deadly
violence Wednesday the president announced
00:34:05
that he dissolved two business advisory
committees composed of top American
00:34:09
corporate executives after at least seven
C.E.O.'s announced they were resigning
00:34:13
from the councils because of his remarks
as the violence unfolded last Saturday
00:34:18
Trump initially blamed it on many sides but
Monday he condemned the neo nazis white
00:34:24
supremacist and racist Ku Klux Klan for
their role in the on rest then on Tuesday
00:34:29
at
00:34:29
a news conference at his Trump Tower in New
York Trump reverted to his initial assessment
00:34:34
. The violence that killed one woman and
wounded nineteen others and joining me now
00:34:39
to discuss is to Hamal Lopez bin Yasi
assistant professor of conflict and
00:34:43
resolution at George Mason
University in the U.S.
00:34:46
State of Virginia so thank you for being
with us are you surprised at the rise in
00:34:51
white supremacist rallies taking place
here in this country I'm not surprised all
00:34:55
kinds of white supremacist call the white
nationalist neo nazis but the dominant
00:35:02
ideology here that binds them together is
that idea that white people are superior
00:35:07
either biologically culturally somehow
more deserving natural leaders whatever it
00:35:13
is and that you know they are the people
who should be in charge and these groups
00:35:18
have been around for centuries some of
them maybe this past century the neo nazis
00:35:24
certainly after World War two But just you
know really been since the civil rights
00:35:29
movement that they've taken mostly to the
shadows and in the past I'd say fifteen
00:35:36
plus years they've really exploded on the
internet so where you may not see the
00:35:42
type of congregations publicly of groups
like the Klan for example and they've had
00:35:48
their protests but they can congregate
online and they can grow online presence
00:35:52
from held
00:35:53
a news conference like none I've ever seen
apparently is AIDS didn't know he was
00:35:57
going to take questions can you give me
some perspective on what you make of all of
00:36:01
that the comments that he that he made you
know it is very hard to make sense of
00:36:06
many things that he says I mean he is truly
right off the cuff surprises I seems
00:36:12
like everyone who's around
him all together he's always
00:36:15
a trump the premises that he's he thinks
he is the best thing since sliced bread
00:36:21
and within you know that trump
supremacy he doesn't have
00:36:24
a challenge against you know
white supremacy doesn't have
00:36:27
a challenge against sexism are able
to is and he's he's the possessor of
00:36:32
a great privilege and. He is not the
defender of any kind of minority in this
00:36:37
country the president did say he believed
that there was less racism since he's
00:36:43
taken office in this country it doesn't
seem to match some of the statistics of
00:36:47
some of the watchdog groups that have been
doing some analysis on the pool I was
00:36:51
taking a look at F.B.I.
00:36:53
Statistics and the numbers for like single
biased incidents have seem to kind of
00:36:58
ANY SENSE find in some cases they've
declined since twenty tends like year seven
00:37:02
thousand to like five thousand eight hundred
twenty fifteen that's the most recent
00:37:07
full reports but we know maybe an unofficial
capacity that there have been all
00:37:12
kinds of incidents in twenty sixteen and
you know into the years of the campaign
00:37:16
election and what's notable I think and
what's important is that we've seen
00:37:22
a slight decrease in the kinds of anti-black
hate crimes you know the two lower
00:37:29
sixty percent to below fifty percent which
means that there are there are more
00:37:33
incidents against people of you know let's
you know dissent people who you know
00:37:38
would be categorized as Asian descent but
mainly the talking about you know people
00:37:41
who might be read as Arab or Muslim so
the kinds of hate is probably being more
00:37:48
widely dispersed but always with the most
against blacks it's interesting because
00:37:53
you know the president of the United
States also you know he has of
00:37:55
a daughter that's Jewish
00:37:56
a son in law that's Jewish and yet he
seemed to indicate in his press conference
00:38:00
that the reason he didn't come out
stronger and same more during his first
00:38:05
statement was that he didn't have all the
facts but there were clearly swastikas
00:38:10
being held and people chanting anti Semitic
comments and I think what's plain and
00:38:16
simple too I think most decent people who
believe in equality they recognize those
00:38:22
things as you know malicious and I don't
think he does but actually since he's been
00:38:28
you know the proponent really you know of
the birth the risen against Obama he he
00:38:34
doesn't. Not care at all about what these
comments that he says about Muslims about
00:38:38
immigrants from generally about Mexicans
he's not concerned I mean he had such
00:38:43
a gut reaction to the most ridiculous
things like you know bad now thing somebody
00:38:47
like you know an actress or something quite
like Meryl Streep but he doesn't have
00:38:52
a great reaction to what you write
supremacy. Do you think this is always been
00:38:57
brewing in our country the white supremacy
but that they're somehow feeling
00:39:02
emboldened from coming out or do you think
that they're recruiting more people
00:39:05
white supremacy has been as an ideology has
been I say alive and well just depends
00:39:11
on you know how public it's been but you
know for most of our for most of our
00:39:14
history it wasn't even like
00:39:17
a question about whether or not white people
were better that really does come into
00:39:20
question with the civil rights movement
00:39:22
a little bit beforehand but I think I
think what's happening is like you know
00:39:26
you're seeing
00:39:27
a big split and we've seen this the United
States you know along partisan lines is
00:39:31
that you have probably more aggressive and
more successful recruiting strategies
00:39:36
for this now we're calling it the all right
but you know white supremacist faction
00:39:41
but we're also seeing I think what's
interesting is more and more white people who
00:39:47
are who are you know publicly protesting
against these groups and who are you
00:39:53
know in some way trying to become supporters
of black lives matter and in support
00:39:59
of immigration reform and so I think it's
an interesting time to study whiteness
00:40:04
because there's like this cleavage
that's occurring along I lines of racial
00:40:08
ideology do you believe in white supremacy
and think that this is the way that you
00:40:12
know the United States should continue
to be because this is what we've been
00:40:15
fighting against for several decades
and we're going through some really
00:40:19
interesting growing pains in this country
and the sad part about that is that the
00:40:23
people who are taking up the opposite side
there seem to be very little place for
00:40:29
discourse and I'm afraid that when you lose
space for discourse that you give. Hali
00:40:34
a disproportionate amount of space to the
possibility of people OK parents against
00:40:38
each other I don't want to see that in my
country. While I don't think any of us do
00:40:43
to him alone has been Yasi assistant
professor of Conflict Resolution at George
00:40:48
Mason University thank you for your your
time turning now to what's trending on
00:40:52
social media we're joined by Andrew pal
cesky handrail what's going on well we have
00:40:57
two follow ups to stories that we've talked
about in the past couple days OK first
00:41:01
as
00:41:01
a follow up to President Obama's tweet he
tweeted out about the protests going on in
00:41:06
Charlottesville we said that tweet was
rapidly becoming one of the most popular
00:41:11
tweets ever well now it is the
most liked tweet ever why
00:41:18
passed the tweet by Ariana Grande day the
singer sent out after the attack outside
00:41:23
her concert in Manchester in the U.K.
00:41:26
Ariana Grande ace tweet had two point seven
million likes President Obama's tweet
00:41:31
surpassed that and not only to surpass
that kept going it's nearing four million
00:41:36
likes so out of people rallying around
this on social media it's become kind of
00:41:41
a way for people to express their opposition
and Horenstein to the white supremacy
00:41:48
the neo nazis and it's going on in
Charlottesville so this is really gone viral in
00:41:53
the biggest way as
00:41:54
a way of people to really express this
and express frustration and anger and
00:41:59
sadness by endorsing liking and retreating
this tweet meant and that tweet by the
00:42:05
way
00:42:05
a quote from Nelson Mandela Yes the quote
is no one is born hating another person
00:42:10
because of the color of their skin or his
background or his religion and actually
00:42:15
that's one of three tweets that the
president former president sent out he
00:42:19
continued that quote on it goes on for
00:42:21
a little longer and each of the
subsequent tweets have over
00:42:24
a million likes and over three hundred
fifty thousand retreats for each of them
00:42:29
anything else happening
yet another follow up to
00:42:31
a story that we talked about which was the
dock. Singh as they call it it's when
00:42:36
people can find your information online and
release it publicly so we talked about
00:42:40
how white supremacists were being docs to
having their information released after
00:42:44
those rallies in Charlottesville when they
were identified in those photos Well now
00:42:47
social media companies are actually stepping
up and they're helping to fight white
00:42:52
supremacy and racism and all of these ugly
things online but they're doing it in
00:42:57
a bit of
00:42:57
a more structured way than people docs
ing in releasing information and social
00:43:01
media companies like Facebook and Reddit
have both announced that they're removing
00:43:05
neo nazi and white supremacists content
they're removing links to content that is
00:43:09
racist from their sites so they're taking
00:43:12
a big step up to remove hate speech of
course this is something we've talked about
00:43:15
more in
00:43:16
a context of people trying to use social
media to recruit or get other people to
00:43:22
involve themselves in terrorism overseas
this is an instance where they're
00:43:26
confronting hate speech here in the United
States and it's interesting not just
00:43:31
with the timing of what happened in
Charlottesville but a new report from
00:43:35
a professor at Virginia Tech saying that
online rhetoric particularly on social
00:43:39
media is actually contributing to the rise
of hate groups and violence in real life
00:43:45
so perhaps stopping that at the source
with social media will stop it from
00:43:49
spreading stop these groups from rallying
and getting together this is something I
00:43:53
actually talked about in my digital daily
video series so for listeners want to
00:43:56
check that out and learn more about this

a joint statement with the president
of Chile they called on Chile and
00:45:22
a number of other Latin American countries
to break all diplomatic and commercial
00:45:25
ties with North Korea we truly believe
that it's imperative that the regime in
00:45:32
Pyongyang understand that all options are
on the take the United States of America
00:45:37
will simply not permit
00:45:39
a rogue regime in North Korea to possess
usable nuclear weapons that can reach the
00:45:45
continental United States and threaten
our people. And while North Korea has no
00:45:50

Will do whatever it takes to prevent

00:46:01
nuclear goals we welcome the statements
of the camera Sheen this week with regard

00:46:09
a nuclear free Korean peninsula and we want
the regime in Pyongyang to permanently

the sun moon and earth will line up
00:47:29
perfectly in the cosmos on August
twenty first turning day into night for
00:47:34
a few wondrous minutes its path crossing
the US from sea to shining sea for the
00:47:39
first time in nearly
00:47:40
a century it will be watched by millions
Joining me for more on this special events
00:47:46
of a total eclipse is NASA. Yet for
00:47:48
a potion lab and Bassett are great Redfern
this does not happen often does it for
00:47:54
any one particular of the earth as an average
about once every three hundred years
00:48:00
a total solar eclipse will be
00:48:01
a bailable or visible thing that makes its
eclipse on August twenty first in the
00:48:07
United States so unique is two things one
it is Totality is going to last from the
00:48:14
time the moon's shadow comes on two
continents in Oregon when it exits
00:48:21
the state of South Carolina and during that
four hours it's ality It's estimated as
00:48:26
much as over two hundred million Americans
could travel and see totality this is
00:48:32
expect to be the most do Eclipse and all
of history Wow Fascinating So where
00:48:38
exactly will it be visible there are
fourteen states that have what shall be
00:48:43
passing through them and I said it starts
in Oregon only this way on down and your
00:48:49
listeners can go to nasa dot and
click on the links that are up
00:48:56
there about the eclipse and one thing I
want to say well if your listeners are
00:49:02
traveling the United States and they think
they're going to be trying to see the
00:49:05
eclipse they want to
make sure that they buy
00:49:08
a solar eclipse glasses and NASA has got
00:49:12
a vendor list of saved and approved solar
eclipse glasses that's the only way to
00:49:18
safety watch this eclipse site and here is
the glory if your listeners can't get to
00:49:24
the Internet or social media NASA is going
to be broadcasting the live the entire
00:49:31
clips from one It starts when it finishes
and that's going to include views from
00:49:36
the International Space Station it's going
to include views from high altitude
00:49:41
balloon and my favorite There are two B.
00:49:46
Fifty seven talks Trotter ass jet that.
Going to be flying and chasing them moon
00:49:51
shadow special telescope to observe the
sun and to observe the time at Mercury
00:49:58
but what about the people like
say here in Washington D.C.
00:50:01
That won't get
00:50:02
a totally clips will we still get to see
something yes you will totality is only
00:50:07
over fourteen states and it's
00:50:09
a mile wide swath everywhere else in the
United States Canada and Mexico it's
00:50:14
a partial solar eclipse in Washington D.C.
00:50:17
We're roughly going to be at about eighty
five or so percent it depends on where
00:50:22
you are and on that massive DOT website
they have an interactive map that you can
00:50:28
precisely pinpoint where you are and click
on where you live or visiting and bring
00:50:34
up how much of the sun is going to be
eclipsed what time does it start for you when
00:50:39
is the greatest amount of Eclipse and one
is that and how high it is in the sky one
00:50:43
stop shop and frame but he wants to see the
eclipse we won't see in Washington D.C.
00:50:49
a Great darkening it's going to look
a little odd the shadow might be
00:50:56
a little bit different but you really have
to get into the upper ninety percentile
00:51:02
of the sun being eclipse to start seeing
brighter stars come out being able to see
00:51:07
the planets and being able to see where
there's smoke shadow is racing across the
00:51:14
earth's surface to Philip it's really
cool and the last time that we had the
00:51:19
eclipse coming across the entire United
States Laurie was ninety nine years ago
00:51:25
June eighth Wow So this is
00:51:27
a special thing in the last
total solar eclipse on the U.S.
00:51:33
One thousand seventy nine and what makes
is this story and why people are calling
00:51:39
it The Great American eclipse is this is
the first time in American history that
00:51:46
clips is coming onto. American soil
and the totality is only visible and
00:51:53
American for American history All right
thanks so much for the info that's NASA Jet
00:51:59
Propulsion Lab and Bassett are very grand
for and remember if you are nowhere near
00:52:04
seeing the eclipse in person you can see
it at nasa dot gov Wednesday marks forty
00:52:10
years since the legendary king of rock N
roll Elvis Presley died at his home in
00:52:15
Memphis at the age of forty two as he
always David Bird tells us fans around the
00:52:20
world are remembering Presley one of the
high in years of rock music Well this is
00:52:25
my little bed little fellow
to play with. Was devoted.
00:52:32
To. Elvis Presley took the world by
storm in the one nine hundred fifty S.
00:52:39
Shaking and gyrating on stage melting girls
hearts with his charismatic good looks
00:52:44
and his curled upper lip Elvis was born
into poverty in Tupelo Mississippi but rose
00:52:50
to stardom on the heels of songs like
Heartbreak Hotel hound dog Blue Suede Shoes
00:52:56
and Love Me Tender Elvis died of complications
from drug use and heart problems on
00:53:01
August sixteenth one thousand nine hundred
seventy seven cents his death fans have
00:53:05
flocked to his Graceland mansion in Memphis
to pay tribute to their hero this year
00:53:11
fans will be able to pay nearly twenty
nine dollars to join the procession to the
00:53:16
Presley family grave
site they will also get
00:53:19
a glimpse of the newly built entertainment
complex which replaced older exhibits
00:53:24
featuring Elvis his cars costumes
and memorabilia Angela tow is
00:53:30
a tourist from Michigan. You
know he had so many employees.
00:53:38
It was R. And B.
00:53:38
It was. Naturally Molly Kendall and her
family drove hours to see the mansion and
00:53:45
to pay tribute to preciously It's crazy
how the. Busy this place is today forty
00:53:50
years later. I think we. Have four hours
to get through this to read today because
00:53:56
of all the people. Listen. To.
00:54:04
Her. In Manila the Philippines several
Elvis impersonators took to the
00:54:11
stage to pay tribute to the music legend
Eddie Lombardo is the Elvis of Italy we're
00:54:17
not trying to duplicate Elvis was nobody
can be Elvis with anyone else as you know
00:54:22
and we're trying to bring the memory of
Elvis back to people especially what we're
00:54:26
doing Douglas Massud other self described
Elvis of Japan says he hopes to
00:54:30
communicate the spirit of Presley's music
so you say oh I feel you know when I sing
00:54:37
well I'm not all that all of I always I
probably don't sound like him but I feel
00:54:42
this. Song if I feel it you feel
it bam I'm paying is described as
00:54:48
a young Elvis sensation
he says that Presley was
00:54:52
a ground breaker for generations of artists
Elvis kind of like banging down the
00:54:57
door to everyone so conservative or yet
Frank Sinatra that he said they were also
00:55:02
conservative and then there's this guy
shaking his head so. That started everything
00:55:07
but I think for everyone Elvis Presley
ranked fourth in Forbes magazine's twenty
00:55:12
sixteen list of top earning dead celebrities
that's not bad but it paled compared
00:55:18
to another king King of Pop Michael Jackson
who earned eight hundred twenty five
00:55:24
million dollars last year in
Washington I'm David Bird A.

London in Washington have
00:56:16
a wonderful day. Next
00:56:46
an editorial reflecting the views of the
United States government it's been nine
00:56:51
years since Russia recognized the Georgian
territories of Abkhazia and South
00:56:55
Ossetia as independent
states after Russia waged
00:56:59
a brief but deadly war with Georgia in
two thousand eight hundred died and more
00:57:04
than one hundred ninety thousand people
were displaced in the five day conflict as
00:57:08
Russian troops advanced into Georgia only
00:57:11
a handful of countries recognize the
so-called independence of the two Georgian
00:57:15
territories which in fact remain firmly
under Russian economic and military control
00:57:20
even to the point of Moscow's integrating
members of its armed forces with those of
00:57:24
South Ossetia the United States and
Georgia consider both Abkhazia and South
00:57:29
Ossetia to be occupied Georgian territory
the Georgian government accuses Russia of
00:57:34
keeping Georgian farmers from their fields
isolating the people in the territories
00:57:39
and further violating Georgia's territorial
integrity by Sarap Tish's the advancing
00:57:44
the administrative boundary line even
deeper into Georgia on the ninth and. Verse
00:57:48
three of the Russia Georgian war August
eighth Russian President Vladimir Putin
00:57:53
visited Abkhazia While there he claimed
that Russia responsibly guarantees the
00:57:58
security and independence of Abkhazia and
expressed confidence that this will be so
00:58:03
in the future as well NATO is acting
spokesperson Dylan white condemned Putin's
00:58:09
visit calling it detrimental to international
efforts to find a peaceful and
00:58:13
a go she added settlement and emphasizing
NATO support for Georgia's sovereignty
00:58:18
and territorial integrity the delegation
of the European Union to Georgia published
00:58:23
a similar denunciation State Department
spokesperson Heather Nauert called the
00:58:27
visit by Putin to the occupied Georgian
territory inappropriate and inconsistent
00:58:32
with the principles underlying the Geneva
International discussions to which Russia
00:58:37
is
00:58:37
a party she also expressed full support for
Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity
00:58:42
within its internationally recognized
borders the United States now it said urges
00:58:47
Russia to withdraw its forces to pre-war
positions per the two thousand and eight
00:58:51
cease fire agreement and reverse is recognition
of the Georgian regions of qazi and
00:58:56
South Ossetia in the meantime as vice
president Mike Pence made clear in his recent
00:59:01
visit to the B.B.C.
00:59:03
The United States will continue to look for
ways that we can strengthen Georgia not
00:59:07
only from the standpoint of its defense
and security but where we can strengthen
00:59:11
Georgia economically creating jobs and
opportunity and prosperity and strengthening
00:59:16
the hand of Georgia so that one day Georgia
can once again celebrate its historic
00:59:21
territorial integrity intact. But it was
an editorial reflecting the views of the
00:59:28
United States government.
